"In a remote corner of Western Tibet, in one of the highest, loneliest, and most desolate places on earth, rises a sublime snow-clad pyramid of rock, Mount Kailash. For more than a thousand years, pilgrims have made the arduous journey here to walk around the mountain in a ancient ritual of devotion, honoring Kailash as a site of immense natural power. Here the temporal and eternal unite, and the divine takes physical form." (from: "The Sacred Mountain of Tibet" Johnson, Moran-Park Street Press)
This journey of a lifetime begins in Nepal. Taking a spectacular flight from Kathmandu, we cross the Himalayan range right beside and pass Sagarmatha (Mt.Everest) to the Tibetan Plateau and Lhasa, the renowned capital of Tibet. Here we first acclimatize to the 3650 m (11972ft) and visit over the next two days it's highlights such as the Potala Palace former winter home of the Dalai Lama). We then drive by Landcruiser on a five day overland safari until we reach the sacred Manasarovar Lake, within site of our venerated destination, Holy Mt. Kailash. After stopping to rest and walk by the lake we prepare ourselves to begin the climax of our "Yatra"-the "Parikrama" or "Kora" (ritual circumambulation) -honouring the traditional Hindhu and Buddhist path around Kailash. This is a three day trek, crossing the highest point at the Dolma La (the pass of redemption and salvation) just over 18,000Ft; a difficult yet unforgettable experience. We then return by a four day road journey back down to Kathmandu.
